First founded in Sicily, the trio led by pianist Sam Mortellaro has pursued its artistic development around the world, and in 2015 won the Contest for its “well-developed style that shows remarkable maturity and originality”. The band leader Sam has stood out since winning the Contest.
With a degree in Jazz and Contemporary Music from the New School University, where he studied with true jazz greats - Marc Copland, Robert Glasper, Pat Metheny, Jimmy Owens and Jeff “Tain” Watts, to mention but a few - after Umbria Jazz he has performed in many clubs abroad and taken part in various international events including the Bern Jazz Festival in Switzerland, Stars of Tomorrow Jazz Festival, Fat Cat and Iridium in New York, Sunside Jazz Club and Baiser Salé in Paris. He’s plays piano for the Italian National Young Jazz Orchestra and, since January 2016, lectures in jazz piano at the Modern Music Institute in Messina, Sicily.
He has recorded a number of albums with various formation in both Paris and New York - including “Wonders” at Systems Two (Brooklyn, NY), with Damion Reid on drums and Vicente Archer on doublebass - and in 2017 Auand Records produced the album Robotic Delusions, in a trio formation with Minacapilli and Alessi. In the last two years, during the summer, Sam has toured for a number of months mainly in Canada and the US.
