The Artistic Judges have decided
Michelangelo Scandroglio Group win Conad Jazz Contest 2019
344 musicians started out, with 108 bands from all over Italy. 10 groups earned the opportunity to perform at the renowned Umbria Jazz Festival, but there is only one winner: the panel of Artistic Judges, headed by Italian Jazz legend Paolo Fresu, deemed Michelangelo Scandroglio Group to be the most talented ensemble of this eighth edition of Conad Jazz Contest, winning 1st place overall.
Led by double bass player Michelangelo Scandroglio, accompanied by Luca Caruso on drums, Nico Tangherlini on piano, Nicola Caminiti on sax and Paolo Petrecca on trumpet, the band is composed of some of the best young musical talents in the country. The Artistic Judges commended the young musicians “for the excellent instrument abilities in terms of both technique and the artistic personality of the individual elements, abilities that were widely confirmed in the live performance, which highlighted the cohesion, originality and relevance of the proposal”.
There was also no lack of appreciation towards all the finalists of this year’s edition; in fact, the Artistic Jury underscored “the high-quality profile and design richness of the 10 entrants selected as finalists.”
With their victory, Michelangelo Scandroglio Group take home a cash prize of 5,000 euros, as well as the opportunity to play during “Il Jazz italiano per L’Aquila” (Italian Jazz for L’Aquila), one of the biggest jazz events in Italy. In addition, in the months following the Festival – thanks to the collaboration with Federazione Nazionale Il Jazz Italiano (Italian National Jazz Federation) – the band will tour the best jazz clubs in Italy, closing the year with a performance at Umbria Jazz Winter #27.
Now, though, our winners are awaited in the European Capital of Culture 2019, Matera, where on Friday 19th July, starting at 9.30 p.m., they will perform for the audience of the initiative Grande Viaggio Insieme Conad (Great Journey with Conad) in the splendid Castello Tramontano Park.
In addition to the prizes won as overall winner of this edition, Michelangelo Scandroglio Group were also offered the opportunity to perform in September at the Paese Jazz Fest, held in Paese (province of Treviso). The Group was invited by the artistic director of the event after hearing the band’s live performance at the Carducci Gardens during the Umbria Jazz Festival.
