Conad Jazz Contest story tells about the protagonists of the past editions of the Contest through a series of interviews with musicians who started their musical career thanks to their performance on the Conad stage at the Giardini Carducci in Perugia for Umbria Jazz.
In this second appointment we interviewed for you The New Sextet Quartet, finalists of the 2024 edition of the Conad Jazz Contest.
The New Sextet Quartet is a jazz group born within the walls of the Vicenza Conservatory from the common need of musicians to express themselves through languages based on improvisation.
The group is composed of: Lorenzo Cucco on tenor sax, Costantino Angelilli on guitar, Christian Guidolin on double bass and Gabriele Da Ros on drums.
Let’s start from the Umbria Jazz stage: What emotions did you feel when you stepped on the stage of Umbria Jazz in front of the public and critics? What memories do you have today of those emotions?
The thrill of stepping onto one of the most prestigious stages at a national level and beyond is always a mix of tension, adrenaline, concentration and the desire to enjoy every minute of music. There is always something new that happens every time this strange alchemy of sensations is created.
We fondly remember the backstage meeting and the welcome of some great musicians who were there to participate in the concerts of the week.
Did the band play again after that performance? Did the band members continue to play in that lineup or did you go your separate ways?
Our project had already had a history of 2 years before the competition and this occasion did nothing but strengthen our bond, musical and otherwise, as well as showcasing several affinities that emerge especially in such stimulating contexts.
You have received new opportunities following participation in the Contest and performances as finalists?
Following our participation in the festival we continued our study path and concert activity as always, we would like to be involved in different realities that offer opportunities for young musicians and composers.
How is your musical project going? Have you created new music together with the band you participated in the Contest with?
In these last months in particular we are preparing a lot of new unreleased material, we work hard to try to select what best expresses the sound of the group.
We always try to build something new starting from what we know, with one foot outside our comfort zone and with an eye on what it could represent in the idea of a record.
What are your future plans?
In the next few months we will finally organize a studio recording session that will lead us to the first official release of this group.
We can’t wait to share our new music with you all!
Thank you so much for your support, see you soon!
